TO HEAL, LET THOUGHT BE ABSENT FROM THE BODY
Though there are diversities of opinion as to ways and means of eliminating human troubles and healing sickness, there is general agreement among men that the center of trouble is the human body and mind, in other words, that it is the human personality, It has therefore seemed reasonable to treat this body for sickness and to try to readjust the surrounding conditions which affect the human personality in order to eliminate trouble.
In the record of mankind we can note the effects of this type of effort, and see that it has not been very successful. The number of diseases has not decreased because of the ministrations, however well-intentioned, of the medical practitioners; and divorce, maladjustments of labor and capital, and international distrust still stalk the human stage. This suggests to the thinker that there must be a fundamental error in the approach of humanity to the solving of its problems. Otherwise, surely, in the many centuries of human effort toward this end, trouble and sickness would have been circumvented.
Christian Science, based upon the works and teachings of Christ Jesus, points out this error in approach and shows how it can be eradicated. Mary Baker Eddy writes (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, pp. 171, 172), "The fundamental error lies in the supposition that man is a material outgrowth and that the cognizance of good or evil, which he has through the bodily senses, constitutes his happiness or misery." Man really is the image and likeness of God, as the Bible states, and expresses the nature of Spirit, his divine source. He is not the inhabitant of a material body. He is spiritual, the individual expression of Spirit, Mind.
