The Des Plaines Journal

Des Plaines, Illinois (First Church).

Dedication of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Des Plaines, at Laurel and Marion Streets, was observed on Sunday, April 13, 1947, by simple morning and afternoon services. As a part of the service the following brief history of the church was read.

In 1915 a small group of residents of Des Plaines met occasionally in private homes to read Christian Science literature. Early in 1918 regular Sunday evening services were begun in Woodman's Hall. Later in that year Sunday morning services were held in a small store at 19 Center Street. Here, on May 17, 1918, Christian Science Society, Des Plaines, was organized. Three weeks later a Sunday School was opened, and on June 19, 1918, the first Wednesday evening meeting was held. In July a Reading Room was opened.
