Before Christian Science was presented to me much of my recreation was dancing, which had become a passion with me. After three years' study of this Science the desire for church membership came. As I examined my thought honestly to see if I was really ready for this important step, I saw clearly that something had to be done about the excessive desire for dancing. It was very evident that simply refraining had not healed the intense desire. I saw that it was animal magnetism that must be destroyed.
I continued the daily reading of the Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly and spent my lunch hour in the Reading Room, Knowing that God would show me the way. My prayer was answered. The message from the first verse of Hymn No. 201 in our Hymnal showed me clearly that this false sense of pleasure claimed to imprison me, to shut me away from ever-present abundant good:
