When I was a small child I had a long and very serious illness. I slept a month without waking. I was not expected to live, and it was said that if I did live I would always be afflicted. Because of this illness my constitution was said to be in a weakened condition, making me susceptible to diseases of all kinds

For many years this appeared to be true, so that my heart ached with despair and discouragement. At a time when I was most miserable, both mentally and physically, I read the last verses of Mark (16:17–20) beginning with the words, "And these signs shall follow them that believe." "Oh," I thought, "I do want to follow the Christ; I thought I believed, but none of these thing are true in my experience." And I prayed earnestly to God that I might know how to believe, and that I might truly learn how to follow Him.

The next week a woman told me how she had been healed of a broken back through Christian Science, and I decided to read the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. I continued to read and study. The testimonies of healing found in the periodicals and those given audibly in the churches meant much to me. When, at first, I was unable to read the Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly with understanding, it was to these I turned for glorious glimpses of God's love and promise, for they told of actual experiences and the thoughts of those healed. In them I found encouragement to continue my search for an understanding of God, and they gave me the strong conviction that His help was available.
