"GOD GIVE US MEN"!
Those were brave words of the port J. G. Holland:
"God give us men. A time like this demands
Strong minds, great hearts, true faith
and ready hands!"
Has not this been mankind's prayer at every crisis in human affairs? When Israel's great leader, Moses, went from mortal sight and his mantle fell on Joshua, that sturdy warrior heard the call of Truth to "be strong and of a good courage" (Josh. 1:18) and show forth that true manhood before which the hosts of error would be vanquished.
Surely the men we pray to have appear are those whose "strong minds, great hearts, true faith and ready hands" will be in evidence because of childlike reliance on that omnipotence which is divine Mind itself. These disturbed times need men and women whose "great hearts" bespeak consecration to the eternal Father-Mother who is Love itself; whose "true faith and ready hands" show forth the light of reflected Truth and Principle. Would that in moments of disagreement and confusion in business, political, and international problems we could hear of more calls for silent prayer; could witness more turning for guidance to the one infinite intelligence by governing committees, boards, and councils. But if only one person in such groups has learned in Christian Science that God is the only Mind, and that all His ideas are reflections of this Mind, his prayer, his realization of the truth, can still many storms and banish the mists of many mortal mind deadlocks and disagreements.
Under the marginal reference "True sense of infinitude" Mary Baker Eddy in "Science and Health with Key to the scriptures" (p. 469) writes, "The exterminator of error is the great truth that God, good, is the only Mind, and that the supposititious opposite of infinite Mind—called devil or evil—is not Mind, is not Truth, but error, without intelligence or reality." Then she adds." There can be but one Mind, because there is but one God; and if mortals claimed no other Mind and accepted no other, sin would be unknown."
Without doubt this is one of the most far-reaching statements in Science and Health. If that which actually gives error its deathblow is the realization that the only Mind and intelligence, God is infinite good, how eagerly, unremittingly, should Christian Scientists affirm this glorious truth! We hear complains about and Condemnation of nations which seem unable because of divergent ideologies to see eye to eye with people of other lands. May God give us at this hour of crisis men of spiritual vision, men and women who are learning in Christian Science the oneness of Mind and its ideas, and who thus can cope intelligently with the serious international problems of separation and misunderstanding.
In her "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 206) our Leader sets forth her concept of the holy mission of her followers. She states: "The real Christian Scientist is constantly accentuating harmony in word and deed, mentally and orally, perpetually repeating this diapason of heaven: Good is my God, and my God is good, Love is my God, and my God is Love.'" When confronted, therefore, with the direful prophecies of impending war and of hopeless deadlocks in the councils of nations, may the Christian scientist be found firmly and joyfully "accentuating harmony" and aiding in the great work of exterminating error by knowing that God, good, is the only Mind.
Students of this Science have proved time and again that knowing this truth has solved all manner of individual problems. Should they not expect, then, the healing of a sick and divided world, when a host of right thinker can shout together, as at the walls of Jericho?
Never were spiritually-minded men and women more needed than today. One trembles to think what earth's prospects might be without the holy influence in human consciousness of the healing Christ Truth, taught by Christian Science. To prove that Mrs. Eddy knew, not believed, that the power of God's Word was sufficient to cope with world problems, as well as the sins, aches, and pains of the individual, we in Science and Health(p. 96): "This material world is even now becoming the arena for conflicting forces. On one side there will be discord and dismay; on the other side there will be Science and peace." Then a little farther on, on the same page, she writes: "During this final conflict, wicked minds will endeavor to find means by which to accomplish more evil; but those who discern Christian Science will hold crime in check, they will aid in the ejection of error. They will maintain law and order, and cheerfully await the certainty of ultimate perfection."
Many times at darkened moments in the world's history have nations been called to special days of prayer; but the Christian Scientist is called daily to pray for all mankind. In her Church Manual, Mrs. Eddy under "Guidance of Members" sets forth three daily duties, under which one finds inspirational direction for these daily prayers—prayers for oneself, the cause of Christian Science, and for all mankind. Wise and blest is the soldier in this great army of right thinkers who frequently consults his Manual to check is alertness and obedience to its God-directed provisions
Affirming the omnipotence of Love and Principle, and the government the one Mind "in earth, as it is in heaven," the Scientist must needs clear the desks of thought of any deterrent or reversing mortal mind beliefs by knowing their utter unreality and powerlessness. There is, in the kingdom of Mind, no animal magnet, no material force to separate men and nations. Divine Love is the only energy, the only attraction holding all creation in its beneficent law. Let us cling to this truth with childlike trust and unwavering expectation in the triumph of Principle. To the spiritully-minded of this hour is entrusted a sacred work. They of all the inhabitants of the globe know what to do with these world problems. Are we faithful to this sublime trust? Are we praying as never before for the healing of the nations? Are we responding to the prayer, "God give us men"?
