Soon after I became interested in Christian Science, prostrating attacks of indigestion stopped. During several sleepless nights I had turned constantly to God in prayer, and to the Bible and the writings of our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, for guidance, when suddenly the turmoil ceased and was replaced by a great calm. In this stillness I felt the presence of Christ, Truth, healing me, and like Job I affirmed (19:25). "I know that my redeemer liveth." Our Leader says in "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 343), "Too soon we cannot turn from disease in the body to find disease in the mortal mind, and its cure, in working for God."

I was proving the truth of this statement, for I realized in that hour that the distress which had seemed to be bodily suffering was really mental, the result of the false teaching of the ages—the fruit of "the tree of knowledge of good and evil" (Gen. 2:9) which had starved the mind of its rightful nutriment from "the tree of life." I saw that had we not partaken of material knowledge from the forbidden tree, we should not have known sin or suffering, and I realized, as taught in Christian Science, that in our true being we are without spot or blemish, the pure image of God. The personality which seems to sin and suffer has no relation to our real spiritual selfhood, which has never fallen from perfection. This healing wrought a great change in my life, and left me with an overwhelming desire to go forth and tell all who would listen the good news of man's purity and perfection and the unreality of the verdict that man is a mortal sinner with a material body.

More than one doctor had told me that I should need to take strong aperients every week for the rest of my life. The difficulty was overcome, however, when I began to take no thought for the body and to ponder the fact that "Mind is the source of all movement, and there is no inertia to retard or check its perpetual and harmonious action" (Science and Health, p. 283). For two months after I gave up aperients there was very little bowel action, but I cast out fear, determined to let Truth have control. A complete healing took place, leaving me free from this lifelong trouble.
