In retrospect, the experience of thirty-seven months' internment, January, 1942, to February, 1945, in Santo Tomas Camp, in Manila, was a testing time, and I now rejoice because I realize that God supported me hourly throughout that whole period. Thus, and only thus, was I able to stand the test.

At times when physical difficulties claimed every last ounce of physical strength, there came the temptation to weaken and accept what appeared an easier way—to be taken into the camp hospital and there receive, and, from a human point of view, enjoy the comfort of attendance and care by qualified U. S. Army nurses and doctors, to rest in a comfortable, clean bed, be waited on with meals, cold drinks, et cetera. What a temptation! Then, too, my wife, who is not a Christian Scientist, frequently pleaded with me to be sensible, to see a doctor and go into the hospital and have "proper" treatment.

Such was my experience during three major difficulties which occurred during internment. In July, 1943, bronchitis; in August, 1943, a bad fall caused by stumbling over some uneven stony ground, resulting in a large cut on the kneecap and badly bruised knee bones; and in October, 1944, bacillary dysentery. At this last time practically all internees were suffering from physical weakness as a result of the starvation diet so systematically administered by the Japanese.
