Enlist and Occupy

Are you an enlisted man? Are you part of an occupational force? You are, if you are a Christian Scientist. "The Christian Scientist has enlisted to lessen evil, disease, and death," writes Mary Baker Eddy in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 450). In this enlistment, the student learns that real force is an attribute of Mind, and that, as he occupies his thought with the divinely mental forces of God, Spirit, he becomes part of an occupational force possessing the only true power capable of destroying discord.

Today much is heard about occupational forces—how many men have been sent, how many will be needed, and how long occupation must continue. Viewed in the light of metaphysical reasoning, however, the utilization of the forces of Truth, which are moral and spiritual, not dependent upon matter in any respect, should be our first concern.

How well David knew this when he was confronted with the physical might of Goliath! With a great show of material strength, Goliath occupied the field; but David, denouncing this false sense of might with the moral strength and fearlessness born of complete dependence on God, declared (I Sam. 17:45), "Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied." In the confident acknowledgment of his God-protected mission, David's human capacities were enlarged and perfected, enabling him to be divinely guided in taking effective measures for overcoming the giant Philistine.
