Our Paper Currency

The writer, brought up as a Christian Scientist, began when very young to read the Christian Science periodicals. She early learned that sickness is healed by spiritual means, and that every type of problem can be worked out in the light of the teachings of Christian Science. This gave her a wonderful sense of confidence in God's power. The names of diseases held no fear for her because she could recall from articles and authenticated testimonies that tuberculosis, blood poisoning, rheumatism, and other ills had been cured through the understanding of Truth. She had read instances of how failing business, and failing faculties had, been restored, how children had been protected. These testimonies were proof of the statement which Mary Baker Eddy makes on pages 142 and 143 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures": "Truth is God's remedy for error of every kind, and Truth destroys only what is untrue. Hence the fact that, today, as yesterday, Christ casts out evils and heals the sick."

The periodicals encouraged the writer to study more thoroughly the Bible, together with Science and Health and our Leader's other prose writings and poems, examining their riches more carefully. As the years have gone by, the periodicals have seemed to her similar to our paper currency with a gold reserve behind it. They are for our everyday use, showing the application of Christian Science to the problems of the day, explaining the modus operandi of Truth, recording victories won, and giving an account of the progressive spiritual unfoldment of other workers. The gold, the treasure which validates and supports the periodicals, and to which they turn our thought, is the inspired Word of the Bible and the clear, logical exposition of its truths given by Mrs. Eddy.

Do we sometimes undervalue our periodicals? They flood in, filled with so many printed pages! We may have the intention to read them through, but perhaps before one copy of the Journal or Sentinel is finished, another with more contributions and records of healing has arrived.
