It is with much joy that I write...

It is with much joy that I write of my gratitude for the blessings that have come to me and to my family through the study and application of Christian Science.

My first healing came from the seed of truth planted in thought while I was reading copies of The Christian Science Journal and the Sentinel that my sister left whenever she visited me. She had been healed of chronic ills and the effect of an operation she had undergone years before. Because of bitter antagonism to Science in my home, we talked privately, and I read the literature only when alone. As I read, I always felt a sense of security in knowing something about God and about man's relationship to Him.

I had been under doctors' care for years, and had gone to many places seeking relief from nervous disorders and a heart ailment. Then a severe attack of arthritis left me helpless, and finally the verdict came that it was doubtful that I should ever walk again. Remembering the testimonies I had read in which the writers recorded having healed themselves by applying the teachings found in the writings of Mary Baker Eddy, I decided to put my trust in God. I had never seen the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy. But I had memorized many of her sayings as they were quoted in the periodicals, and my sister had taught me "the scientific statement of being," which appears on page 468 of Science and Health. Armed with these and a fairly good knowledge of the Scriptures, I denied the doctor's verdict and declared that no material laws could govern me.
