In the year 1925, while I was...
In the year 1925, while I was suffering from a nervous breakdown, Christian Science was presented to me by a brother who had been healed of a broken bone in his foot. At that time he was not a Christian Scientist, but despite my insistence that my condition was so bad that I could not read a paragraph at one time or think through the Lord's Prayer, he brought from the bottom of his trunk a copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, and begged me at least to try to read some of the chapter on Fruitage. This I did, and then turned to the chapter on Prayer, which I read through.
My thought was so illumined that I felt I must shout for joy. I wanted everyone to read it and to understand the true way of praying. I continued reading the book at every possible moment, reading far into the night, until I had read it through.
The nerve trouble was proved to be no part of my real self as a child of God. At the same time I was also healed of a distressing chronic throat trouble which had clung to me ever since I was a child, and for which I had treatments from several medical doctors, one of whom was a throat specialist. This condition has never returned.
