Why is it that snowdrops make such a big appeal to the human heart? I think one reason is that we admire the courage of these hardy perennials. They are no hothouse plant. Their strength and their beauty come from hardy living. The winter snow may be still on the ground, and the frost may be still in the air yet they never fail to make their appearance year by year.

These lovely creatures not only sing a silent Te Deum of their own, but they teach... the value of courage and hope, of optimism and fortitude. It's not easy to hold fast to these virtues in these days. Life is sometimes gray and grim, but the snowdrops still tell us that we can smile our way through all our difficulties and dangers if only we put our trust in God and are never daunted by the powers of darkness....
