Reading Room Notes

Employment Secured

One student of Christian Science who came regularly to the Reading Room for several weeks, stopped on his way past the librarian's desk to ask her to give him a statement of truth that would help him. His business had declined and it was necessary for him to move from the apartment he occupied by the end of the week. He had no place to go, no money with which to pay a month's rent in advance if he found a place, and not even money enough to pay his moving expenses. He was almost beside himself with fear.

The librarian brought to his attention the definition of "man" on page 475 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and particularly the statements: "Man is idea, the image, of Love; he is not physique. He is the compound idea of God including all right ideas." She pointed out that, this being true, man includes by reflection all right ideas of business, home, supply. Therefore, man is complete and perfect in Him, lacking nothing. The student was told that what he needed to do was to accept these truths and claim his heritage as a son of God. She reminded him that John said (I John 3:2), "Now are we the sons of God."

Later he returned to tell the librarian that after he left the Reading Room that afternoon he "walked on air." He went home claiming his true spiritual selfhood and inseparability from his Father-Mother God and realizing that, as an heir of God, he already had everything he needed. In less than an hour after he reached his home the telephone rang and an acquaintance whom he had not seen in many years asked him if he would take charge of an apartment building for him, offering a small salary and the use of a nice apartment. He gratefully accepted.
