I knew nothing of Christian Science...
I knew nothing of Christian Science until the year 1932, when a young man joined the staff at the business house where I was employed. After a few months I realized that he was living Christianity in a very practical way, that he was courteous, gracious, and kind to everybody, and I was led to ask him what church he attended. He told me he was a member of the Christian Science church. I asked him many questions as to what Scientists believe. Very patiently he told me many things. He said that when he heard of Christian Science, at the age of sixteen, he had already had seven surgical operations for a condition which doctors had said would continue all through his life. From the time he began to study the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, he had never needed any medical attention, and had enjoyed excellent health for several years.
I had been an active member of an orthodox church from childhood, but soon realized that the teachings of Christian Science were much more in accordance with Christ Jesus' teaching than was the theology of the orthodox church. In 1933 I attended a Wednesday evening testimony meeting and was so impressed with what I heard that I have attended regularly ever since. I immediately borrowed the textbook and read it through; then I commenced studying the Lesson-Sermon from the Quarterly. In 1934 I resigned from membership in the orthodox church, and the following year became a member of a branch church and of The Mother Church.
I did not come into Christian Science for physical healing, but discovered later that the minor ailments from which I had suffered indigestion, bilious attacks, warts, chilblains, and nasal catarrh (which had bothered me continuously for many years), had just slipped away. I rejoiced in good health.
