Entertaining Angels
What a wealth of comfort, of beauty and strength, is opened up to us through the definition of "angels" given by Mary Baker Eddy in the Glossary of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures"! On page 581 we read: "Angels. God's thoughts passing to man; spiritual intuitions, pure and perfect; the inspiration of goodness, purity, and immortality, counteracting all evil, sensuality, and mortality." This definition is so satisfying in its logic and intelligence that we accept with joy and assurance the thought of angels and their part in our living. We begin to realize their presence and their office, trust their power, and obey their commands.
Are we then entertaining angels, welcoming them into our consciousness, and giving them an honored place? We cannot have too many as our guests. The more we have, the more expansive becomes the place of their abode. These angels dissolve all barriers of limitation. They do not take room; they make room and expand their domain. The barriers of fear and hate, jealousy or malice, resentment or bitterness, sorrow and suffering, sensuality and mortality, melt at their presence. They bring with them light, and reflected Love, and reveal the unreality of aught unlike themselves as they lead into the infinite realm of God's goodness.
On pages 566 and 567 of Science and Health Mrs. Eddy says: "The Old Testament assigns to the angels, God's divine messages, different offices. Michael's characteristic is spiritual strength. He leads the hosts of heaven against the power of sin, Satan, and lights the holy wars. Gabriel has the more quiet task of imparting a sense of the ever-presence of ministering Love. These angels deliver us from the depths." These angels of God's presence, then, vary in their character and office, but we may be sure they are always close at hand and unfailing in their charge.
