For the coming into my life of...
For the coming into my life of Christian Science, which Mrs. Eddy defines in "Rudimental Divine Science" (p. 1) as "the law of God, the law of good, interpreting and demonstrating the divine Principle and rule of universal harmony," I am very grateful. I cannot picture existence without this guiding religion.
During high school and college years I was constantly plagued by a wide variety of illnesses. Summer vacations were spent principally in rest and recuperation for the following term. After I had graduated from the university, I became ill with tuberculosis and spent many months as an invalid. Having plenty of time to think, I became thoroughly convinced that there was a better way of life; and since I was not improving under medical care I rebelled against further material aid, determined to find that better way of life.
Impressed by the exemplary living of a very close friend, who was a Christian Scientist, I gradually realized that through her I could find the answer to that which I was seeking. With her help I began to study Mrs. Eddy's writings, and to attend church services. As my consciousness slowly filled with the truth as taught in Science, and thoughts of illness receded, tuberculosis and many of the other ills vanished. The healings were slow, but from the beginning of my study I realized that in the degree that I gave less thought to the body it ceased to trouble me.
After these healings I passed a medical examination required for a position, with the highest score among five applicants. I shall ever be grateful for the help of the friend who started me in Christian Science, and for the patient guidance of a practitioner.
The truth has been a constant help to me in my work in an airline office. By seeing my true self and that of others as the expression of God, I have found that difficult situations have given place to friendly and courteous relationships. My gratitude is deep for the instant availability of the Christ. "Lo, I am with you alway."
How wonderful it is to be free from the bondage of social drinking and smoking and to know that real enjoyment can come only from God's company! I am very grateful for the knowledge that Science requires us to give up nothing that is worth while, but that through it we gain everything that is good.
The numerous healings I have had, have meant much to me; but, even more, I value the peace and quietude of mind, and the knowledge of the purpose of life which Christian Science has given me. It is with a grateful heart that I thank Mrs. Eddy for her marvelous gift to mankind.—(Miss) Lois Garberson, Albuquerque, New Mexico.
