During many years Christian Science...
During many years Christian Science has been a great source of help and inspiration to me. It has turned me to the study of the Bible, a book I seldom read before becoming interested in this Science. It has cured me of many discordant habits and ways.
Mary Baker Eddy, our revered Leader, states in the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 14): "Entirely separate from the belief and dream of material living, is the Life divine, revealing spiritual understanding and the consciousness of man's dominion over the whole earth. This understanding casts out error and heals the sick, and with it you can speak 'as one having authority.'"
A few months before D-Day I was home on leave from a seagoing ship awaiting a new appointment. After a few days I received orders from the Admiralty to take a course of instruction for a job which conjured up a fear of never returning. All sorts of dreadful pictures kept coming up in my mind. I went to a Christian Science practitioner, and together we saw that man cannot lose his life. I saw, too, that safety is in Mind—it is a quality of spiritual thought. I thought of the experience of Daniel in the lions' den, and of the Hebrew youths who walked safely through the Men furnace. I was grateful to know that we can never fear anything real, and that reality is all there is; also for the words on page 403 of Science and Health, "You command the situation if you understand that mortal existence is a state of self-deception and not the truth of being." When I saw that I lived and had my being in Mind, I also became aware that I could not be harmed. Then it was that all sense of fear left me, and I was willing to go anywhere that duty demanded.
