I wish to express my deep gratitude...

I wish to express my deep gratitude for the teachings of Christian Science. I feel especially privileged to have had the background of instruction in the Christian Science Sunday School, although I have at times strayed from the precious wisdom so freely and lovingly given there. I can recall the difficulty my mother often had rounding me up when it was time to go to Sunday school. Later a very patient and loving wife had a similar experience on Wednesday night or just at church time on Sunday, when I somehow seemed to find the most important things to do.

As the necessity for working out my own salvation became more apparent and I no longer could lean on others, I realized that the intricate problems facing me must be solved through my own understanding of Christian Science. For the first time, about five years ago, after joining the Navy, I discovered that others were looking to me for direction, and that not only did I have to solve my own immediate problems, but in doing so had to guide the men under me. Turning to Science and using to the best of my ability what I had been taught have brought about many remarkable demonstrations, among which are those of protection, supply, position, and guidance.

During the height of the submarine warfare in the Atlantic, as skipper of a small sub chaser, it became necessary for me to decide how to rescue a group of survivors whose ship had just been blown to bits. The immediate area was covered with high octane gasoline and fuel oil, which had ignited as a result of the explosions. To enter this would expose my own ship and crew to disaster; not to enter meant the survivors would not be rescued. My knowledge and experience from a professional point of view were very limited. But my knowledge of God and the divine power ever at hand was not limited. Decisions and actions were taken instantly, based on the guidance of the "still small voice" within. Instead of thinking in terms of limitations, I thought only of how powerful is the Word of God. Every survivor was picked up and no member of the crew was lost or injured. Our ship, while damaged slightly, making it necessary to steer entirely by the engines, was brought safely back to port. Part of this return to base was made in the black of night through a narrow and winding mine field.
