Fearless Living
Clearly and unmistakably Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, pointed out to Christian Scientists the absolute necessity of freeing their lives from all fear. In one brief sentence Mrs. Eddy tells us the effects of fear which is not destroyed: "Sickness, disease, and death proceed from fear" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 260). How important it is, then, for Scientists daily and persistently to destroy all fearful thoughts, consciously or unconsciously entertained, since the elimination of fear is not only a curative, but also a preventive of disease and death.
To learn more about God, His allness and His beneficence, is the scientific way to destroy fear. A dictionary defines fear as "an emotion characterized by dread or expectation of harm." As one ponders the fact that the only power in the universe is wholly good, divine Love, can one continue to dread an apparent or a hidden evil? Can an individual be in "expectation of harm" when he has clearly realized that God is his Father-Mother, and that God is imparting only good to His beloved son?
The Bible records much evidence that Jesus understood and was aware of his oneness with God. Is there any evidence that Jesus was ever afraid? Quite the contrary; his certain knowledge of God's allness rendered impossible any fear whatever, and he was able to walk on the water, quiet the waves, heal the sick, and raise the dead. What an example of fearless living! And when he came to the last great trial, the crucifixion, his complete demonstration of his sonship with God enabled him to triumph over what mortal mind most fears, namely, death.
