What We Most Need

A former Officiating Wartime Minister, Major-General Spencer E. Hollond, manager of the London Branch of the Christian Science Wartime Activities of The Mother Church, speaking in branch churches on his recent visit in the United States, said in substance: "What we most need in our Reading Rooms is the spirit of the Christ. Jesus said (John 12:32), 'And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me.' When the Christlike qualities which Jesus expressed are lifted up in the consciousness of librarians and committee members until they really radiate Truth and Love, large numbers will be drawn to our Reading Rooms.

"Each one who goes into a Christian Science Reading Room has a right to expect to touch the hem of the Christly garment of Truth, and to be lifted up, healed, and regenerated. If this does not happen, the Reading Room is not fulfilling its whole mission. But it does happen in proportion as librarians and attendants rise to the spiritual opportunity to which they have been called.

"Mary Baker Eddy writes in 'Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures' (p. 249): 'Let us feel the divine energy of Spirit, bringing us into newness of life and recognizing no mortal nor material power as able to destroy. Let us rejoice that we are subject to the divine "powers that be." ' When librarians 'feel the divine energy of Spirit' bringing them 'into newness of life,' they will be lifted above the supposititious arguments of opposition, resistance, or carnality and will rejoice in the healings accomplished in their Reading Rooms. Men and women are drawn to the Christ, Truth, only by 'the divine energy of Spirit.'
