I was taken captive by the...

I was taken captive by the Japanese army on the island of Guam on December 10, 1941. I had in my possession at the time of my capture a pocket edition of the Bible and of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and two copies of the Christian Science Quarterly. The Japanese officer who searched me expressed his disgust at Christianity and the Bible, but no mention was made of Science and Health. I was allowed to keep both books throughout the entire time of internment, forty-five months.

In February, 1942, after being transferred to a civilian internment camp in Kobe, Japan, and during a severe cold period, I was stricken with an attack of pneumonia. At the most critical time, when the pain in my lungs seemed almost unbearable, the angel thought came to me that the government of the world was on God's shoulders, not on mine. I slept soundly that night and awoke in the morning free from pain. A few days later all the symptoms of congestion disappeared, and I was healed, despite lack of clothes, food, blankets, or heat in our crowded camp.

In the many weary months that followed, when through lack of news we despaired lest America had forgotten us, this healing was a beacon light, proving that God is at hand in the darkest hour to protect and guide and care for us.
