During the summer of 1918, I...

During the summer of 1918, I had a nervous breakdown, and my parents asked a neighbor to come and try to interest me in the teachings of Christian Science. Although I was at first most unwilling to listen to this kind friend, in a very short time I was healed. Some weeks later I experienced instantaneous relief from a severe attack of laryngitis while I was walking to the office of a Christian Science practitioner for my first interview. At the time I was a professional singer and this trouble greatly interfered with my career. Through the help of a practitioner, the attacks grew less frequent until they finally disappeared. I have also been healed of pleurisy, neuritis, and appendicitis.

Several times I have had wonderful protection from accidents. Once I fell very heavily from my horse, being thrown over his head onto my shoulder. By repeating and pondering "the scientific statement of being" from the Christian Science textbook (Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, p. 468), I was able to remount and ride slowly to my home. With the help of absent treatment I was well and able to ride the following day.

As an ambulance driver in London during the blitz of 1940 and 1941, I had opportunities to prove God's all-power and presence, as well as on the two occasions on which my home was blitzed. While I am deeply grateful for the healings I have had, it is the gradual purification and regeneration of my character which means more to me than anything else.
