Rules of Demonstration

Christian Science is a religion based on divine Principle, with fixed scientific rules for its demonstration. These rules have been made perfectly plain for the world to know. The least analytical thinker may understand and obey them. The most profound thinker may find delight in their immaculate logic and scientific pleasure in demonstrating their availability and power. Christ Jesus demonstrated their infallibility and said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me"—divine Truth.

Mary Baker Eddy asks on page 9 of her sermon, "Christian Science versus Pantheism," "Is there a religion under the sun that hath demonstrated one God and the four first rules pertaining thereto, namely, 'Thou shalt have no other gods before me;' 'Love thy neighbor as thyself; ' 'Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect;' 'Whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die.'" Here are the first four rules that demand understanding and obedience in order to demonstrate the Science of Christianity and its healing power.

Speaking of the demands of "the Science of Soul," which are the demands of Christian Science. Mrs. Eddy says on page. 467 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures": "The first demand of this Science is, 'Thou shalt have no other gods before me.' This me is Spirit. Therefore the command means this: Thou shalt have no intelligence, no life, no substance, no truth, no love, but that which is spiritual." How inclusive and far-reaching is this first command! To state this one first rule, "Thou shalt have no other gods before me [Spirit]," and then depart from it to give reality to the rules of matter in working out the problem of being, is to ensure failure at the beginning.
