Letters to the Press from Christian Science Committees on Publication

Midday Times

R. Ashley Vines, Committee on Publication for Victoria, Australia Midday Times, Melbourne

A correspondent in one of your recent issues has quoted, from a book written by Mark Twain, several derogatory passages concerning Christian Science and its Discoverer and Founder, Mary Baker Eddy.

It is now well known that Mark Twain changed his point of view concerning Christian Science. Several years after writing the book recommended by your correspondent, Mark Twain, contradicting his previous statements, said: "Christian Science is humanity's boon. ... She [Mrs. Eddy] has organized and made available a healing principle that for two thousand years has never been employed except as the merest kind of guess-work. She is the benefactor of the age." (From "My Husband Gabrilowitsch," by Clara Clemens, who was Mark Twain's daughter.)
