Grace Before Service

For what we now are to receive, dear Lord—
The soaring Psalms, the melody of praise,
The message that has fed us seven days,
Transcribed from page to heart, pure word by word,
The blessed silence and the faith restored
By draughts of prayer that satisfy always—
For all of these and so much more that stays
Our hunger, Lord, our thanks for this Thy board.

Let all the household vessels still unfilled
Be gathered early on this Sabbath morn
To hold new wine, that none of it be spilled,
And bread prepared by Love for the newborn.
Let pause precede the quenching of our thirst
That gratitude may cross the threshold first.
