In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" our dear Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, writes of herself (p. 152): "Every material dependence had failed her in her search for truth; and she can now understand why, and can see the means by which mortals are divinely driven to a spiritual source for health and happiness."

I had been ill and in bed for several months. After the doctors had held a consultation, one of them came to my bedside and told me that all that medical science could do had been done for me, that I might live a few days and possibly two or three weeks, and that I might pass on at any time. When I asked him to tell me the nature of the disease, he said it was tuberculosis in the last stages.

I knew nothing about Christian Science except that it had healed my uncle of cancer. As soon as the doctor left me I began to think about that, and the thought came to me that if Christian Science could heal a cancer, perhaps it could heal me. I told my husband that I was going to try it. He said, "If you do, it will heal you." I did not know that I could have absent treatment or that I could have a practitioner come to me. I only knew where the practitioner lived who had treated my uncle, and that was two hundred miles from my home, but I thought I must go to her. My husband told the doctor, who replied that I could not be moved; that if my husband took the chance of moving me it must be down South. I would not consider this, however, and finally the doctor was persuaded to let me go. He came and helped put me on a chair to be carried to the train. My brother met us at the train with a spring wagon with a mattress in it and took me to my mother's home.
