When the disciples asked Jesus...

When the disciples asked Jesus (Matt. 18:1), "Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?" his answer was plain (18:3,4): "Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven."

The wonderful grace of children and their ready acceptance of Truth have been immeasurable aids along the way. My nine-year-old daughter, through her glad acceptance of the First Commandment, was healed of the effects of a very painful experience. While carrying a teakettle of boiling water from the stove, she fell down. I called a practitioner at once, but the child was not relieved. When I called her again she told me to "keep working." That instruction gave me courage. Finally I said aloud and repeatedly to the child, "Remember your Sunday school lesson, Thou shalt have no other gods before me' [Ex. 20:3]. God is Love. He was there first. You are not burned. It's a lie." Soon the child told me that she was all right.

We had a guest at the time, and also many people came to see the child, so there seemed quite a need for protective work. Using the thought that Love was there first, I was wonderfully protected from fear and the child was protected far beyond anything I could have imagined. Although her arm, hand, and side were severely burned, within two weeks the flesh was completely healed, leaving no blemish. This experience proves what our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, says (The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, p. 113): "A child will demonstrate Christian Science and have a clear perception of it."
