Christian Science Committee on Publication for Staffordshire, England, Reports

Friendly relations with editors of the leading newspapers in the county have been maintained during the year.

One reply only has been necessary. A doctor in an address on the Beveridge plan said that quackery was rampant, and included Christian Science under this heading. In the Committee's reply it was pointed out that Christian Science is a demonstrable religion, based on the Bible and the teachings of Christ Jesus, and fulfills the prophecy of our Master, "They shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover" (Mark 16:18). The editor considered this letter a final answer and permitted no further criticisms to be printed; and thus a statement of truth concluded the correspondence.

There have been several appreciative comments in local papers on our "Gems of Thought" service. An editor of a daily paper prints one each day under the heading "Today's Quotation." When the Committee called upon him, he said so many letters of appreciation of this daily feature had been received from readers that he was unable to publish them. On three occasions, however, he directed inquirers, who had expressed especial gratitude for quotations from Mrs. Eddy's works, to the nearest Christian Science Reading Room, stating that books could be obtained there.
