The Individual Path to Peace

"Give to us peace in our time, O Lord!" This refrain finds an echo in thousands of hearts today. It is one of the contradictions of humanity that while so many people have always longed for peace they have just as constantly been engaged in war. It is the anomaly of the upward struggle of mankind. In the fight for self-preservation in individuals and nations, envy, jealousy, and the love of domination arise and constantly engender strife. Until these are driven from the heart we can look for no millennium, though with steady improvement we may attain to a partial peace, which will seem a blessing only by comparison with what has gone before.

And yet, nature in her grandest manifestations breathes of peace. What Whitman called "the splendid silent sun," shines on undisturbed by wars and noises of war; the moon goes serenely on her way, and the stars look down with quiet eyes .
