Excerpts from Letters Concerning Christian Science Wartime Activities
[From an American Sailor]
Our ship participated in the initial invasion of Okinawa, and our Wednesday evening meetings (Christian Science group on ship) prior to the invasion, were held for the specific purpose of denying the material and mortal thinking to be encountered in the assault. Among the Scriptural selections read were Psalm 23. Psalm 91, and a number of other Bible selections pertaining to protection, overcoming fear and danger, et cetera. "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, together with her "Miscellaneous Writings," the Sentinel, the Journal, and authorized pamphlets, were read with assurance. The truth that God is only good, not bad, was emphasized; also, that the divine Principle could not at the same time produce danger and safety. God is safe, and makes His children safe at all times and in all places, and this safety is enduring.
When the first wave of enemy fighters reached our group of ships, I overcame fear by declaring that fear is an offense to God.
