Our Wednesday Evening Meetings

At our Wednesday evening meetings the responsibility for an inspiring meeting is shared by all present. In "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 149) our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, says, "Invite all cordially and freely to this banquet of Christian Science, this feast and flow of Soul." To such a feast students of Christian Science bring their offerings, which they gratefully share with others. These offerings are not of a monetary nature, but consist of experiences and testimonies, also remarks on Christian Science, by members of the congregation.

These midweek meetings were first held on Thursday evenings, then on Friday evenings for several years, and since June, 1898, they have been held on Wednesday evenings. No change has been made in the day on which the meetings are held, or in the procedure, since 1906. Those interested in the early history of these meetings may find it briefly stated at the beginning of Chapter XX of "Historical Sketches" by Clifford P. Smith. The healing ministry of Christian Science, which has always been the principal topic presented for consideration, is brought forth in the reading from the desk which precedes the period devoted to testimonies, as well as in the testimonies themselves.

It has been found that the "reading from the Bible, and correlative passages from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (Manual, p. 122), can be most helpful when the subject is a simple one and the reading not too long. The selections chosen for this part of the meeting by the First Reader in The Mother Church consist of references from not more than four separate books of the Bible, and not more than ten correlative passages from Science and Health, and fewer when possible, and are read in about ten or twelve minutes. Where the congregations are small, a longer time may be devoted to the reading.
