For the many testimonies of...

For the many testimonies of healing that have appeared in the Journal and Sentinel I wish to send this expression of my deep gratitude. My interest in Christian Science was first aroused by these testimonies, and they were instrumental in leading me to read the textbook of Christian Science, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy.

The members of the household in which I was reared, while devoutly religious, always looked to materia medica for treating physical ailments. One of my parents being a physician, I knew only by hearsay of any other healing art, and relegated them all to a common end of worthless quackery. When I first learned of Christian Science I had an educated prejudice against it. My interest in it at that time was mostly due to a desire to discredit its healings of diseases, many of which I had been taught were incurable. Here, I thought, was the most unbelievable of all the departures from medicine.

These testimonies, I agreed, were sincerely stated. I did not doubt that at least some of them were true. Such things as irritable natures, nervousness, insomnia, and the like might be treated successfully without medicine; but how could appendicitis, rupture, wens, cancer be treated successfully by simple, unassisted prayer? In setting about to investigate the healings in Christian Science I watched the periodicals for specific ailments. Also I read the final chapter, entitled "Fruitage," in the Christian Science textbook. In the course of my reading I discovered that every type of disease I knew of, plus several I had never known, had been healed through the ministrations of the Science of Christianity, as taught by Christ Jesus and reinstated by Mary Baker Eddy.
