Showing the Father

One late spring morning, after some weeks of dull, dreary weather, the sun appeared, and a Christian Science student said to herself, "Spring is really here at last!" Then the thought occurred to her, "How do I know?" And she realized that the answer lay in the evidences of spring, the first flowers in the woods, bursting buds, blue sky, and bright sunshine.

Two quotations from the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, came to her thought at this point (p. 255), "Eye hath not seen Spirit, nor hath ear heard His voice;" and (pp. 300, 301), "God is revealed only in that which reflects Life, Truth, Love,—yea, which manifests God's attributes and power, even as the human likeness thrown upon the mirror, repeats the color, form, and action of the person in front of the mirror." Thus, the student reasoned, even as spring is seen only by its manifestations, so God is seen only in the spiritual qualities which reflect Him.

Then thought wandered to Philip's words to Jesus (John 14:8), "Lord, shew us the Father, and it sufficeth us;" and to Jesus' reply (verse 9): "Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father?"
