Celestial Harmony

Musicians know well that their instruments must be strung exactly right in order to produce sweet musical sounds. But however perfectly the strings are adjusted, no beautiful tones will be forthcoming unless the player has technical mastery of his instrument and is well versed in the fundamentals of musicianship.

Our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, has adopted this simile, for in her deep and compassionate understanding of the human heart she knew that at times it could feel quite like a quivering instrument, for there are some who believe themselves to be "highly strung," or unusually sensitive. The impact of good or bad beliefs upon such thought may have repercussions seeming to affect the body either beneficially or adversely, as the case may be.

Mrs. Eddy writes on page 213 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures": "Music is the rhythm of head and heart. Mortal mind is the harp of many strings, discoursing either discord or harmony according as the hand, which sweeps over it, is human or divine." She knew well that the divine touch upon human sensibilities resolves discord into harmony as nothing else can do, giving the blessed and joyful experience of relief from strain, worry, tension, and the like.
