One afternoon about nine years...

One afternoon about nine years ago, while I was seated in a hotel lobby, an object suddenly struck me with great force across the face and right wrist. I later learned that the engineer, while raising the ventilators on the mezzanine, had dropped his pliers on the skylight, breaking one of the glass panels. This panel fell thirty-two feet below, striking me.

I was rushed to the hospital, where my injuries were dressed. A few days later I realized I was blind. I remained in the hospital seventy-eight days following the accident. Upon leaving the hospital I could see objects faintly, but it was necessary that I be led everywhere I went. At this time I was not a student of Christian Science.

About three years after this accident occurred I had a strong desire to attend church, and my wife took me to a Christian Science church, choosing it only as a matter of convenience, for it was nearest our home. After attending the first service, I obtained a copy of "The Life of Mary Baker Eddy" by Sibyl Wilbur. By the time my wife had read a few chapters to me I decided to get a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy. We continued to attend the church services regularly and my wife read Science and Health to me every available moment.
