Working with Divine Principle
King David , "the sweet psalmist of Israel," meditating on the wonders of creation, was inspired to write these beautiful words (Ps. 19:1, 2): "The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork. Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge." David observed that days followed one another in an endless, orderly procession. The sun ran its appointed course through the heavens. The night sky was blazoned with innumerable stars, all moving through endless space with a majestic rhythm. Thus the succession of days told their tale of a universal, governing divine Principle; and night after night showed the effects of knowledge, of realizing the presence of one omnipotent Mind. David was led to the conclusion (verse 7) that "the law of the Lord is perfect, ... the testimony of the Lord is sure."
Job too glimpsed the marvels of creation, and expressed his wonderment in this fashion (Job 38:4, 6, 7): "Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? ... whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? or who laid the corner stone thereof; when the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?" The harmony which pervaded the universe was such that it seemed the heavenly bodies were joined in one grand anthem of praise to their divine Maker, and man shouted with the very joy of being.
Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, perceived that spiritual law underlay creation, and she gave to the creator the name "Principle." In many places in her published writings she couples the names "Principle" and "Love" together. Some people may regard the word "Principle" as a cold, abstract word, and object to its use in connection with Deity. When, however, Principle and Love are understood to be synonymous, all sense of coldness is taken away. Love indicates the nature of the action of Principle. From it nothing unloving could ever emanate. It could never produce evil, but ever brings peace, order, and harmony to all that it touches. The working of Principle assures life, health, happiness, and abundance to mankind.
