Are We Striving for Consistency?

All students of Christian Science wish to demonstrate more effectively the truth about God and man which was discovered by Mary Baker Eddy and set forth in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." We have learned that Christian Science rests on divine Principle and is the law of God. Therefore intelligent steps such as are helpful successfully to master any subject are generally necessary. If we wish to become informed and proficient in the science of music or mathematics, for instance, we shall set about learning in a logical way. First, we shall seek a clear and authoritative explanation of the subject. Next, in a simple way, we shall put into practice the first lessons to the best of our understanding.

The procedure may then include further study and continuing practical work. We shall also probably seek competent instruction. But the most vital and important step will be daily practice and living. With consistent use of new-found knowledge there is no danger of confusion or of building on a weak foundation, and further study will be continued more easily and be more fruitful.

Christian Science, the Science of Christianity, should be approached in just such a manner. The fundamental exposition of the Science of being is given in its textbook. Further explanation, counsel, and advice may be found in the other writings of Mrs. Eddy. Thorough understanding of this truth does not come, however, until we put into practice what we read and learn. Each lesson must be taken in its proper order. Until we have mastered the simpler lessons of music and practiced them thoroughly we do not expect to undertake the playing of a concerto.
