Look Up

Two friends were waiting to cross a busy thoroughfare. Traffic lights were not yet in general use, and in the center, where several roads met, a policeman stood, directing and controlling the streams of traffic.

One of the friends, watching the policeman, stepped forward to cross over; the other, glancing doubtfully at the oncoming traffic, hesitated. Her companion encouraged her, saying, "Don't watch the traffic; keep your eye on the policeman." Then she too observed that the officer had raised his hand to stop the flow of traffic, and the two crossed over in safety.

From this little incident one of them gained a useful lesson. When problems and difficulties appeared pressing, or danger claimed to be present, she would recall the warning, "Don't watch the traffic; keep your eye on the policeman." She would then remind herself: Don't watch error; turn your gaze in the right direction, towards that which controls the situation. Trust God's law, which governs the universe, the law of Love, ever present to guide and protect. "I will lift up mine eyes," sang the Psalmist (Ps. 121:1), "I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth."
