Letters to the Press from Christian Science Committees on Publication

It seems to me a matter for regret that the topic of broad-mindedness in religion should have been used to furnish an opportunity for criticism of another Christian religion, for it defeats the object of that column, which was to show the common basis of all Christian religions.

Jesus expressed the divine nature of God more than anyone else has ever done, and Christian Science does not deny the divinity of the Christ, but it draws the distinction between the eternal Christ and the human Jesus. Thus on page 333 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy we read: "Jesus was a human name, which belonged to him in common with other Hebrew boys and men, for it is identical with the name Joshua, the renowned Hebrew leader. On the other hand, Christ is not a name so much as the divine title of Jesus. Christ expresses God's spiritual, eternal nature." In her Message to The Mother Church for 1901, Mrs. Eddy also says (p. 8): "When Jesus said, 'I and my Father are one' and 'my Father is greater than I,' this was said in the sense that one ray of light is light, and it is one with light, but it is not the full-orbed sun. Therefore we have the authority of Jesus for saying Christ is not God, but an impartation of Him."
