Joy in Sunday School Work

One of the most satisfying activities which students of Christian Science can engage in is teaching in our Sunday schools. This work is truly in fields "white already to harvest" (John 4:35), to which Jesus referred; and the blessing which comes from a careful and loving administration of Sunday school affairs is not easily measured.

The very acceptance of a post of any sort in a Christian Science Sunday School indicates willingness to put down the claim of self, regardless of personal plans and counterinterests. To be prepared with an alert, inspirational message every week, without a single slump into indifference and incompetence is the goal of the consecrated teacher.

The fact that Mary Baker Eddy arranged for a Christian Science Sunday School soon after her first church organization was established, shows clearly the importance she gave to this work. Every biography that has been written about her has emphasized her great love for children, and has brought out the fact that she drew them to her wherever she went. That she had their welfare ever in thought is evidenced by her frequent references to them in her writings, and the care with which she outlined what they should be taught of the truth. The paragraphs in the Church Manual regarding Sunday schools, and in the Concordances under the word "children," bring out these points clearly.
