In the grim days of the present, ... trust in a divine and merciful Providence becomes the reality of a sincere and contrite heart. Nor, we are told, has that trust ever been misplaced. Human judgments may err, what promises well today may be upset tomorrow, men may look in vain for comfort from their fellow men but in the Lord is man's sure refuge against all of the perils of the world....

In men who have seen action under fire this trust is a real and confident force.... Strange as it may seem, there is a calm in the human heart after one has learned to lean upon God: the terrors of the moment are remote and impersonal, and all of life is related to a higher purpose and a higher will than man's. Most individuals who have been once through such an experience carry the warmth and assurance of it for the rest of their lives. They have experienced something beyond the normal definitions of mankind, something abiding and real....
