I have had the privilege of growing...

I have had the privilege of growing up in Christian Science, and I am most grateful for its protective and preventive power. While my parents' and later my own understanding of this blessed truth has resulted in my having had few physical problems to meet, I should like to tell of one healing that took place while I was in high school.

A painful callus about the size of a quarter on the sole of one of my feet had bothered me for over a year, during which time I had worked for myself with no apparent success. When I talked the matter over with my mother one day, she pointed out that I had grown unduly critical of my classmates. In the Lesson-Sermon that week was the sentence (Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, p. 466), "Science will declare God aright, and Christianity will demonstrate this declaration and its divine Principle, making mankind better physically, morally, and spiritually." She drew my attention to the fact that while I had been declaring the truth aright, I had not been demonstrating it. From then on I strove to be less critical, and before the week was over the callus had disappeared.

Another healing which proved clearly to me that disease is mental and not physical was of an abscess on my right elbow. For three days my arm was so sore I could hardly bear the touch of a sleeve, and the condition seriously interfered with my college work, for I had much writing to do. As I was studying the Lesson-Sermon one afternoon it suddenly occurred to me that a certain individual might be resenting something which I had said with the best of intentions and in complete innocence, but which I realized afterwards it had been perhaps unwise to say.
