Right Understanding
Mary Baker Eddy writes in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 207): "There is but one primal cause. Therefore there can be no effect from any other cause, and there can be no reality in aught which does not proceed from this great and only cause." God, "this great and only cause," is good. Whatever God, good, creates is good, harmonious, eternal. Hence whatever is evil, discordant, painful, grievous, or destructive has in reality no cause at all. It is not created.
But, some may exclaim, how can that be? People have always experienced evil, disease, grief, pain, death. The world is right now going through a period of destruction and death. If these evils have no cause, and no existence, where do they come from? How can they be?
The answer is that they cannot be. And when we learn the truth of being, they cannot even seem to be. Mrs. Eddy says (ibid., p. 390), "It is our ignorance of God, the divine Principle, which produces apparent discord, and the right understanding of Him restores harmony."
