When Christian Science was...
When Christian Science was first brought to my attention, I had as bad health as it is possible for a human being to have and still be actively employed. I was suffering from a severe and painful stomach trouble, and for years I traveled throughout the United States trying one guaranteed remedy after another, returning to Illinois despairing of ever enjoying food again. A friend, who had been healed of spinal trouble, recommended Christian Science, and in desperation I agreed to try it being willing to try anything for relief from the continual suffering, although I had not the slightest idea what he was talking about.
A loving practitioner spent half an hour giving me what I afterwards discovered to be a silent treatment. That evening, before boarding a train, I fearfully ate some mince pie and drank some coffee as a supreme test, then waited for painful results. Much to my surprise I had a fine sleep on the train, and the next morning ate a hearty breakfast, something I had not done for several months.
The practitioner kindly led my faltering footsteps in the understanding of Mrs. Eddy's teachings, opening up for me this treasure haven of healing truth as found in Science and Health.
