Little Sentinels

[Of Special Interest to Children]

Constance was five years old. She had outgrown the nursery and it sometimes seemed that her room was far from Mother and very dark, too, especially when she awakened in the night after prayers had been said and Mother had gone away.

During one of their bedtime talks, Mother told Constance about sentinels. Sentinels, of course, are watchmen. When the children of Israel were going to their new home, they had to stop in a strange place very often at night. So, while some of them rested, there were sentinels who stayed awake watching to see that only good could come into their camp. A sentinel had to be someone ready to think quickly and think rightly. Anyone would be happy to be chosen for such important work.

"And so." said Mother, "we must watch that only good thoughts are permitted to enter the camp of our consciousness day and night."
