"When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee" (Isa. 43:2). This beautiful passage brought me confidence and inspiration while I was en route to an island in the Pacific on a crowded, top-heavy, and unescorted troopship. There was a good deal of speculation among the men regarding the possibility of our being torpedoed and sunk. I refused to take any part in these discussions and instead realized, as we are taught in Christian Science, that man, the idea of infinite Love, cannot be destroyed or lost.

Early one cold, black morning word was passed that our Radar equipment had spotted a surfaced submarine, which did not answer any of our signals. We kept on our course and to everyone's surprise the submarine did not fire on us. After reaching our destination, we learned that Japanese submarine "wolf packs" had been operating in that area. All went well the whole trip, and even the ocean was unusually calm. The following verses from Mrs. Eddy's hymn (Poems, p. 12) were a constant inspiration:
