What Is a Miracle?

At one period in the war, when the enemy was boasting of its power to overrun all boundaries, and was indeed advancing rapidly toward Egypt, the writer found herself wishing that a miracle would happen.

It seemed that only a miracle could stop the disastrous onrush which appeared so threatening. As the word "miracle" kept recurring in thought, she realized that a study of its meaning was desirable.

On page 83 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mary Baker Eddy says, "Miracles are impossible in Science, and here Science takes issue with popular religions." She then explains the reason for this statement: "The belief that the universe, including man is governed in general by material laws, but that occasionally Spirit sets aside these laws,—this belief belittles omnipotent wisdom, and gives to matter the precedence over Spirit."
