Love the Liberator

[Of Special Interest to Youth]

A Christian Scientist knows that had Daniel acknowledged any other power or presence than the omnipotence and omnipresence of divine Love, he would not have been blessed with the remarkable protection that was his when he was confronted with the hatred and jealousy of the carnal mind.

A child, who had become a Christian Scientist when very small and had felt the influence of Love's presence in her home, was placed by the stress of circumstances in a household where the truth was not understood and where a sense of animosity was being expressed in criticism and unjust treatment. During this period a large growth developed on her foot, which became increasingly uncomfortable as the days went by. Finally she turned to her mother for help. Together they read Jesus' beautiful Sermon on the Mount, and came to the Master's teaching (Matt. 5:44, 45), "Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; that ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven." Gratefully acknowledging the many healings with which they had been blessed through Christian Science, they realized the opportunity that was theirs to prove once more the liberating power of divine Love.

Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, says in our textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (pp. 476, 477): "Jesus beheld in Science the perfect man, who appeared to him where sinning mortal man appears to mortals. In this perfect man the Saviour saw God's own likeness, and this correct view of man healed the sick." The little girl clung to these truths throughout the week, endeavoring each day to return good for evil and to lift the thought of her tormentors into the sunlight of kindlier conversation and better thought models. On the seventh day, while putting on her shoe, she discovered that her foot was normal in every way. Resentment over her experience had vanished, and ever after a happier relationship was enjoyed with those in that household.
