True Happiness

It is everyone's right to be truly happy. Happiness is as natural to the real man as is harmony to music. Happiness is like the strains of a symphony orchestra emitting tones of vibrancy, color, and beauty. In the textbook of Christian Science, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mary Baker Eddy writes (p. 57): "Happiness is spiritual, born of Truth and Love. It is unselfish; therefore it cannot exist alone, but requires all mankind to share it." Happiness is a natural outcome of cheerful giving and loving; it frees the heavy-laden and brings an atmosphere of good will and peace. Spiritual enjoyment alone gives real satisfaction. Everyone can be truly happy if he will look for happiness in the realm of Soul.

Since true happiness is spiritual, it is not dependent upon circumstance or place. It is a holy condition of thought, and is as everlastingly permanent in its spiritual nature as is God, its source. Because of these spiritual facts, one can be truly happy wherever he is, whether he be at home or abroad, in the air, on or under the sea.

A young student of Christian Science in the armed forces who was serving near the front lines found it his privilege to administer to the needs of some civilians in a small Italian town. His kindness and their loving expressions of gratitude for what he had done for them moved him to write in a letter: "I am so happy. Today, I learned what the Bible means where it says: 'Whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.'" His was the joy of giving. There, within the sound of bursting bombs and heavy artillery, having as an abode only a small tent, he had touched the chord of happiness by loving and serving his fellow men. There in the midst of war and chaos he could sincerely say, "I am so happy."
