When I first entered the Army,...

When I first entered the Army, there were three things that bothered me quite a bit. They were the strenuous physical training program, the continual voicing of error by those around me, and the apparent inanity of many things we were called upon to do.

Numerous verses from the Bible, as well as statements from the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, helped me. I was able to prove literally true such verses as, "They shall run and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint," by refusing to look upon myself as material. Realizing that my being was spiritual. I saw I was not under the control of any material so-called law of climate, heat, cold, stress, or strain. Mrs. Eddy says (Science and Health, p. 475), "Man is not matter; he is not made up of brain, blood, bones, and other material elements."

By keeping these truths in mind as I hiked or did other unaccustomed exercises, I was always able to do what was required of me. I knew I had no material muscles to become tense or strained, and that no weight could bear me down, because there are no burdens of any kind in man's real, spiritual environment. "Whatever it is your duty to do, you can do without harm to yourself." Mrs. Eddy tells us (ibid., p. 385). and this thought sustained me under trying conditions.
